    Pads?

Never used a pad as opposed to an UQ. Can anyone recommend a lightweight one with good insulation qualities?

For light and affordable it would be hard to beat CCF. Blue mats can be had a Walmart for about $10. A bigger wider option would be a 25" wide pad from a vendor like Gossamer Gear.

+1 for the walmart specials. You'll want to do something to get it wider at your shoulders, get 2 and then make yourself a SPE or cut the second down to hammock width and cross it like a T. With a single layer hammock be prepared for it to slide around on you a bit.
