Have you tried the Airplane Monument trail near Stonewall peak? That's a great day hike. I've done Stonewall peak a dozen or so times because we use to rock climb there. There are several really good hikes right off of highway 79 in that area.

There was also a great hike out of Anza Borrego. It went to a palm oasis out in the desert. I can't remember the name of the hike but many, it was wonderful.

Of course, you're also just 2 hours away from Idylwild which has some great trails including a section of the PCT.

I just climbed Stonewall today! We had some snow on the ground and it was a great day to be on the trail. I love that park I've hiked and mountain biked all over the state park it's a great place to play.

There are quite a few hikes in Borrego. Palm Canyon has water, Sheep's Canyon, Cougar Canyon, Coyote Canyon is nice, 29 palms is a good 4x4 ride, and the wind caves off Split Mountain are awesome...
