Been there and done that (several times) and went back for more. Where I used to work we called that testing to failure. Do as I say and not as I do...use some sort of crash pad!
I have a hammock that is double 1.1 oz fabric. I am 270#'s and it SEEMS to hold me with ease. BUTTTT... I have not done any long term testing nor has the fabric suffered any abrasion (briars, underbrush ect.) that it would be subjected to when hiking. I used a 1.9oz inner with a 1.1oz outer fabric for a number of years and it held up well. My purpose was to ward off mosquitos and not for securing a pad but I don't see why that wouldn't work. The bottom layer should stretch tight enough to keep the pad snugged up against you and prevent cold spots.

...and there came to be a day, all too soon, that I became aware that I could travel no more on my long journey. Though I did not arrive where I had planned, I believe that here is exactly where I am supposed to be...
