    Newbie dilemma

All right, so this isn't a dilemma with a particular piece of gear or a problem with a hanging technique. I guess it's more in my head.

I picked up my first camping hammock on eBay last year (a Hennessy Ultralight Explorer), and started getting serious about it late last summer or early fall. I didn't get in too many nights before my pad insulation became inadequate. Since then I have invested in a 20° underquilt, and a larger tarp. I recently had a successful test at 21°, so I'll be ready when spring arrives.

Here's my problem. When I used to go hiking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing in the woods, I would notice the birds, foliage, and the interesting natural features around me. Now whenever I go into the woods, all I see are trees for hanging hammocks! When I look around, I'm always thinking "there's two good trees", "I could sleep there", "or I could sleep there"...

Does this ever wear off? Or is there a cure?

It's only a problem if you stop noticing good hang spots.

    Newbie dilemma

I drive truck in Vancouver and surrounding cities and ever time I goto UBC or some park, I just look for spots to hang and wonder if I should try ninja camping there. Between the cops and the homeless it's hard to find good places in the city.

You will stop thinking about it when you finally go to sleep, then you just dream about it......RR

haha, I do that all the time, in shopping malls, walking around the city, driving...it doesn't end. Its good practice though to see a spot from afar and then find out if your assessment was correct when you see it up close.

You'll just have to become an arborist, then you'll be paying attention to the trees anyway.

Most of my knifes have bank line on or in then and it just happens to be 15' long. Lol. On breaks ill pull the line out and see if I was right about perfect tree spacing. People look at you like you've lost your mind! I've been asked wtf about 25 times.

You think looking at trees is bad,,,when I am in buildings and convention centers setting trade shows,,always looking at pillars, columns, and various pipes next to them and thinking if they would hold me in a hammock..jeeeze,,what a darned addiction! Last week pulling a all niter setup,,attached 2 electrical I-Beam clamps to 2 steel I Beam columns and racked out for 4 hrs. It can be done!

During a 40 year career in the Electric System field, I was constantly looking at power lines and substation equipment - and pointing out all the design features and other 'interesting' facts to my 'ever so appreciative' family.
Now that I am retired, that interest is rapidly fading - only to be replaced by the constant search for places to hang. The study of hammocking is so much more technical than mere electical theory and design - you have to consider tree spacing, underbrush, scenery, privacy, weather, widow makers, etc.
    I'm enjoying the new problem...
