My usual way of greeting new people: as I'm shaking their hand, I pull in close & say "Hi, I'm Gary, I ain't right"

So, yea, no questions about my sanity, I ain't got none. After over 30 years of marriage, my wife doesn't even shake her head anymore, although sometimes I think she rolls her eyes at me behind my back, ESPECIALLY when I come in with new camping gear.

Welcome to the slippery slope! It's a great ride! & even though the normals don't really understand, they do envy us.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

I think this is normal for pretty much any hobby. Go ask a Mopar guy what he spends on car parts or tools, or an outdoorsman what he spends on hunting/fishing gear and you'll have the same response.

I don't think you spent enough. Sanity is highly over rated.

I agree. Also the "forums" that go along with each hobbie tend to not only add to the insanity but keep your free time tied up at the computer. I found this out in 08 when I joined greeneggers.com. I sometimes even missed supper. I tried to justify it by saying "I'm doing it so I can learn to cook YA'LL some good food".
It was after a few years I ran across a letter written by a very funny guy who was into making mustard that I realized there may be an issue. He was going on and on about how many different types of mustard there were and how far he had traveled to hang out with other mustardy folk. I don't remember everything he said but suffice it to say he had come to the end of himself and needed help.
Anyway I'm just getting started in my hammocking journey and my hope is that in the end I can say "It was worth it".
To the OP, I've been good and not spent too much...yet.

Hammock Purchases That Question Your Sanity

What I'm doing isn't insanity! I'm merely trying to single-handedly pull this economy out of the recession!

I don't question my sanity, all my hammock purchases make sense to me. My wife on the other hand swears that I'm just not playing with a full deck.

Well my non-backpacking friends think I'm crazy for wanting to backpack, my backpacking friends think I'm crazy for hammocking, and my wife knows I'm crazy... It's all good.

    Lemme do the maths...

    Hammock: 60$
    Tarp: 60£
    Suspension: 45$
    Sleeping bag: 350$
    Under Quilt: 113$
    Paracord 30£
Pulk to haul it all on: 157$
Rigid trace and harness for pulk 87$
Snake skins for hammock and tarp 38$ (including freight)
    Freight 40$
    Import taxes 105$
    -------------
    A grand total of 1080$

Not all on the same order, but all ordered or purchased within the same week or so.

Prior to this my hamocking experience was 1 - one night in a WWII era Jungle hammock.

    Does this quallify?

never EVER put it in writing... mentally store it all, it doesn't look as bad that way and there is no proof
