Haven't read the entire thread, so apologies if I'm repeating anything.
Yes, water should be plentiful. Yes, last year they instituted rules on the Blood Mountain stretch about bear canisters (and even no camping from Woods Hole Shelter to Neels Gap) because of bear problems, so check with the authorities for current situation.
Even with your buddies bailing, you will have plenty of company, as March is prime AT thru-hiker start season. And yes, except for the Blood Mountain bear rules, you can pretty much camp anywhere you wish along that portion of trail.

Thanks RainMan, I check the regs and I should be find as long as I don't camp between Jarrard Gap and Neels Gap. There probably will be a lot of foot traffic, but for safetys sake I prefer to have a group of at least 2.
