Is a winter hammock system capable of 20 degree temps heavier than a tent and bag and pad? I can get to 30 degrees with my underquilt and top bag - but below that is what I consider serious business.

Depends on who you ask. I can go to zero with roughly 5lbs of sleeping gear (hammock, quilts, & tarp). I don't wear anything special clothing wise, just a dry base layer.
Trust nobody!
I can easily do 20° with a single 1/4" CCF plus my 3/4 underquilt
hammock 12oz
ccf 6oz
UQ 15oz
TQ 16oz
tarp 20oz
all weights reflect everything, stuff sacks, stakes, guylines etc..
nothing special about my setup, exept its all DIY ('cept the ccf)
the TQ is good to about 25-27 and I'll wear a base layer top, and a down inner vest with a fleece watchcap to push a few degrees lower. 20° is certainly doable. My TQ is the limiting factor. For me, its around 4lb, 5oz
so, compare this to even a UL tent setup:
tarptent contrail 25oz
prolite 4 24oz
WM ultralight 26oz
some sort of pillow 1-8oz
thats anywhere between 4lbs 12oz and 5lbs 3oz
but where you really pay the penalty is sleeping on the ground, like a dog

I'm telling ya, all you guys cold take your systems to a lower temp if you'd just get a JRB Hood.
I had 5.5 lb in my hammock, tarp, sleeping bag used as a TQ, 2/3 UQ, and full length ccf pad at the Mt Rogers hang...it got to about 13* and it was 82* inside my hammock!
