How do you store your gear when at home?

My main question is for my tarp. I have a superfly and was wondering how people store their tarps.

The reason I as is because the last time I put my tarp up it was in snakeskins and I left it that way stored in my closet. When I got it out the next time it was very wrinkled although it looked fine after a couple of days out.

I want to make sure I'm taking care of my stuff and want to know if storing it in the snakeskins will hurt the tarp or not.

great question. Mine are stored in mesh snake skin. They are put up dry. But have only been stored like that maybe a year, with a few uses mixed in, so probably not more than 3 or 4 monts in a skin at one stretch.

I keep my sleeping bag and tarp in a large Rubbermaid tote with a good sealed lid out of their stuff sacks so they can spread out and are not compressed or creased anywhere.

Now I do keep them in my attic which I have always wondered if the heat will degrade the gear at all but so far I haven't had any issues.

I keep the rest of my gear in labeled totes so I know where it is and can get what i need depending on what I am doing. I also keep a double nest in my car at all times, just in case.

I use 18L totes but keep the tarps/hammocks in their sacks. The only things that stay loose are the quilts. Of course stoves and all the other non-sack gear is organized in specific totes.

I store my tarps in the mesh skins, in a tote. After a trip I always hang my tarp up and wipe it down with a clean damp rag. It's always surprising to see how much grim gets on a tarp over a weekend. When it's dry, in the tote it goes.

My work schedule often allows me to do unexpected overnights so my pack stays packed and ready to go. Only need to pick a meal from the freezer and out the door.

I tend to keep all my gear, except for lofting insulating items, in their respective stuff sacks/skins when not in use.

Of course I tend to fiddle with my gear nearly everyday, so it is almost never that everything is actually put away.

I have some hooks in the ceiling in my gear room, so after use I assure my tarps are dry and clean...and let 'em hang 'til nature calls. Helps avoid the creases, especially on my cuben.

I keep down items hanging so they don't compress. My tarp is always wiped down and dry then skinned in mesh snakeskins inside my pack in a gear closet. No problems w/it like this so far.

I think the key to keeping gear useful over years of use is keeping it clean and stored properly which to me means keeping down items out and expandable and everything else just clean and stored in protected places from elements/bugs.
