Where do you buy your permethrin?

Just my experience. YMMV. I learned to purchase the stuff for in-home use. It almost is "odorless" as the label says.

It does have a little smell to it, but you could treat your clothes and wait a day and then wash then once should take care of the odor and still be affective

How long will it be effective? I have never used permethrin but it sounds like a good investment to discourage the bugs. How well does it stick to nylon or polyester? How often do you treat your gear? Or do you just treat your clothes? Some (sgt. rock I think was one) just treated his bug net vs the whole hammock. I suppose if you don't need the net you don't need the permethrin. Sounds like a reasonable idea. New to this. Sounds like I have a bit of research to do. -J

It bonds to fabric. No problems with synthetics. It's advertised to be good through 6 washings. I usually retreat after no more than 4 washings to be safe. It's very effective on ticks and skeeters. I never go out without it.

Went on an over night a few weeks ago. On the last day my girlfriend picked up a tick on her (treated) sock. Didn't notice it until she was putting it into the wash. The tick was DEAD!

You might want to try this Gordon's on something before you do all your clothes with it. It does have a considerable odor, even after washed one time. Although it is not an odor from permetherin itself, it might be objectionable to some people. I wish I had only treated some pieces of gear, instead of doing everything. Hope the smell dies down after more washings. I soaked items, did not spray.

hi ,as some of you know i live on a farm ,that said i have used several forms of permetherin the higher concentrations i use to spray the entire barn to eliminate flys parasites etc..the petroleum distilates ruins the seals in my sprayers it drys them up and makes them brittle i cant help but wonder how it would effect certain fabrics long term. what i have been using for quite some time now is gordons sheep and goat spray it is .5 percent no odor no mixing around 12.00 bucks a gallon. i do not use a bug net . it is mild enough to spray freshly sheared sheep and goats directly i apply it on my gear with a small sprayer pump type think it holds 1/2 a gallon.just another avenue to consider that has been working for me..TRAV. and yes we do use it on our sheep and goats lol

I just saw it on the shelf in the camping section at Wally World for $10 in a handy spray bottle. Looked like enough to do a few items.

    Two questions.

Is it safe to use on gear?
does it really work to keep those bugs away from your set up (like someone who has gone and delt with and without it on their gear for a comparision would be great)???

    Yes. And Yes.

As an example, at the G3 Hang last year, I spent 4 hours out there setting up an orienteering course without Permethrin on my clothing. I picked up three ticks on me during that time.

Less than a day later, I spent 72 near-continuous hours out in the same exact area after treating my clothes and picked up two ticks on me.

That's a difference of 3/4 an hour to 1/36 an hour chance of getting a tick. I'd say that's a pretty ringing endorsement for it.

I bought some concentrate at our local FarmNFleet. Mixed about 35:1 and sprayed clothes and hammocks. They air dried for 2-3 hours and then I put them in a garbage bag in the camping room for a few days. Everything is now outside airing out and the petro smell is dissipating greatly.
The road to success is always under construction.
