    Hammock = Smaller pack?

    I am frustrated with my pack size & weight.

    I have totaled up the weight of my pack contents a number of times and even now that I have switched to carrying a WBBB and DIY hex tarp instead of a tent, I am not able to get my pack weight or volume down to where I want them.

    I am carrying a 75 liter REI pack that is just under 5 lbs. I had hoped that I could use a smaller & lighter pack (like an Ula), but my poncho liner UQ takes up a LOT of space in my pack. I am also carrying a down sleeping bag instead of a TQ, which adds more bulk than I need. Of course if I swap out the bulkier items for those that compress more, I can drop the pack size and thus the weight of the pack as well.

    Here is my question: what size pack are you guys carrying for a multi-day trip? I've seen Shug's videos, but just wanted to know if everyone else is carrying similar sized loads?

    I have a Go-lite pinnacle. I am not sure what size that is, but it's lite weight and fairly large. I can carry everything, including a PLUQ and PLTQ. This includes meals, water, extra clothes, cook kit, first aid kit.......RR

    Re: Hammock = Smaller pack?

    I use a kelty red wind 50l... I have it where everything fits inside with weather down to 40*... And down to the teens with a pad and hammock sock strapped to the bottom... I use a synthetic underquilt and a down sleeping bag... I also carry a lot of extra stuff compared to most, hatchet, knives, saw, extra fuel, canteen and my Camelbak... I have no issues fitting it all at 40*...

    about 4000 cu inches inside and out,,with using all pockets on a pack,,and you can carry alot..check out Shugs video again,,and the way he packs it. There is alot of packs out there that are very very light weight in that cu. inch range.

    I have a 65L and its always 2/3rds full. Next pack will be smaller. I'm still new but from what I have learned and read so far, colder temps will require alot more gear and your pack size will end up being alot bigger. Doesn't hurt to have several pack sizes for different temps. Same for gear setups.

    I use a modular pack system that expands and contracts based on each trip, but I've got ballpark figures. My summer pack volume (down to 50* F) is somewhere in the 35 L range, including three days' food. My 3-season (down to 20* F) volume is somewhere in the 45 L range, including three days' food. For each additional day of food, add ~1.5 L.

    Hope it helps!

    How many days are you going on with a 75 liter pack? What season?

    I've got a 55L Gregory that I've had for a few years, now. I use that for winter trips. That will get me through a good week. I also have a 32L Osprey Hornet that I use for the rest of the year. I got through a 7 day/6 night, wet, chilly, summer trip in the Smokies with that one. I would never carry a 75L pack, even in winter. This tells me that you are maybe packing something that doesn't need to go, or need to figure out a better way to organize your gear.

    I did a 4 day winter trip in the 55 liter with a 0 degree down Kelty sleeping bag that was pretty bulky. On over-20-degree winter trips I use a 30 degree down sleeping bag as a top quilt, so that takes up a decent amount of room, as well. I figured out how to save space in other ways to make sure those fit.

    I usually carry about 2-3 liters of water with me and filter as I go, I don't bring a bunch of clothes, and I plan carefully to not bring excess food. A lot of this was from trial and error, and making mistakes. The trick is to really figure out what is unnecessary for the trip. My friend would fill a 70 liter because he would pack a lot of extra stuff like 3 full-sized down pillows, way too many changes of clothes, way too much food, and he had a tent. A down under quilt would save some space, but like I said, I think the problem lies elsewhere. (Sorry for the length.)

    I run 2200 cubic inches cool to warm weather and little over 3000 cold, if I am going out under 5 days no refills. Longer I go around 65L. I have my system pretty dialed in for what I find comfortable.
