    New NW AR Hanger

    Hey Guys.

I'm new to Hammocks all around so I thought I'd first post to say hello, and to ask for advice for my first 2-Night Hiking trip.

Towards the end of March me and some buddies are going to take a hiking trip to the Ozark Highlands trail here in AR. I'm guessing the night temperatures will be in the 40s, which is just my guess, as the weather here is nutso.

I just bought a WB DL Traveller and a WB Superfly, but I'm afraid with even the Superfly blocking the wind, that I'll get chilly at night. I dont want to spend the money on a dedicated UQ, do you think that an Insulated Pad would be warm enough?

    Thanks for the opinions guys.

Hi NightRaven! I camp and backpack in Arkansas quite a bit, in fact I just completed the Eagle Rock loop this past weekend. I now use a 3/4 underquilt, but before that I use either a thermarest pad or my custom-made Reflectix pad, both of which I seem to be fine with when the lows are in the 40's or above. It also can make a difference what temp your sleeping bag is.

Hello and Welcome from Canada! A great number of hangers here only rock the pad for insulation.

Welcome... I'm also in NWA area. I'm still new to hanging, but have enough experience to know that you'll want some type of under-insulation in late March. I've used the HHSS which is just an OCF pad and SB - and done fine with temps into the high 30s with this system. Your insulated pad should be OK, but may be less than optimum on comfort - depending on how it lays in your hammock.

Lots of good info on this forum - and lots of suspension & insulation systems to consider. Have a great trip.

Welcome to the trees. A pad can work fine to keep the chill off. Practice a bit at home before you hit the trail if you can though.

The best way to learn is to talk with folks and try things out... the best place I know of to do that is at a group hammock hang. There is a big one this weekend just a couple of hours southeast of you. Here's the planning thread.

There will be a bunch of great folks there some with tons of experience and some out for the first time. My suggestion is to go there even if only a day trip on Saturday. Say hi to Smokehouse and tell him UncleMJM sent you.
