10' blackbird or 11' XLC for first hammock?

i am new to camping/hammocks but have decided to go blackbird for my first setup.

    currently am 5'-11" / 205lbs

would a 1.1 double layer xlc (net only) be a good one to start with or should i go with the standard 10'? i dont know if i have the patience to wait for a 10' xlc...

side note: i do plan on getting the 3-season yeti UQ with it. still debating between superfly / mamajamba.

also, i read the double 1.1 is "silkier" than the single 1.7 material. Considering i'm no fan of silk bed sheets, should i rule out the 1.1 material or is it just smoother than 1.7 but not quite real silk smooth ?

    thanks for any advice!

I think a number of people will be receiving their XLC's shortly, so you might wait a bit longer (week or two?) before deciding, then you can read the various reviews coming in.

If you are keen on the XLC and its a questions between DL 1.1 and SL 1.7, I am both a fan of DL's and 1.1 material. Gives me more options, an increased sense of durability (my opinion) and i do like the feel.

If your 5' 11" and 200lbs,,go with the 11' in my opinion, as you will enjoy the flatter lay than a 10' especially if your new to hammocking. Any chance you might be able to visit a local hang in your state to try out some hammocks before you buy? If not,,and you decided to buy,,you can always send it back to WB as they do have a 60 day return policy or even sell it on this forum for about what you have invested in it. Good luck.

I'm 5'10" and prefer an 11 foot. Don't choose something other than ideal because of one or two weeks. I'd say go for the XLC.

I'd also opt for the Superfly. Those few ounces are worth the doors, especially with the longer XLC.

I'd vote for the 11' XLC and the Superfly.

I'd go with either a normal Blackbird or check out Dream Hammocks Dangerbird. I recently recieved my Dangerbird 65 in the mail. I'll admit I haven't used the XLC but I do have a Blackbird 1.7 double. I prefer the Dangerbirds design over the XLC in that the bug netting and over cover remain attached to the hammock. I don't like how the over cover on the XLC is not part of the hammock... . The regular Blackbirds are a work of art though...mine is incredibly comfy...I likely will just toss a coin as to whether I use my Blackbird or Dangerbird on trips...they both are awesome...I'd give a slight edge to the Blackbird just because the zipper system is more simply and easier to use and likely won't fail too easily (I've had zero issues with mine so far). The zipper system on the Dangerbird is smaller and not as easy to close when laying within the hammock...the trade off though is the Dangerbird has a built in over cover that can be used...so that is a great feature.

Perhaps after some videos of the XLC being used in the field have been posted I will change my mind on it...but my current thoughts are the Dangerbird has a better overall design... .

Wait until people get their XLCs in the mail and their wives make them sell their blackbirds. A used blackbird is still a blackbird

I just Ordered my XLC and Brandon advised it should ship in a week.
I like the convertible aspect so I can choose netting, cover or open air based on the temp and situation. Also I prefer the concept of increased airflow which seemed to be the only grip with the original BB

I have a ten ft Dream Hammock Dangerbird and have had a WBBB in the past. I haven't used a XLC. I like the Dangerbird better than the WBBB, but both are very comfortable. I think the XLC is a big enough improvement over the WBBB that if I were choosing between the WBBB and XLC, I'd go for the XLC, even though I'd have to deal with the added length. I'm only 5' 6". At 5' 10" you may be more comfortable with a 11' hammock. You might want to give the Dream Hammocks a look see before you buy.
