I think it has more to do with the fact that its just cheaper online...
Well, maybe so. But I think the post I responded to referenced the fill quality difference between the store and the web ones. Speaking for myself I would have given the extra 5 dollars if I was happy with the fill at the store.
I understand that I could move feathers from one part of the unused portion of the bag to the other and complete the voids but I doubt my ability to sew well and was thinking I could sew first then trim the excess off. Add grosgrain channels and some shock cord with the baffles always closed.
Picked one up tonight at my local Walmart and a bit of fluffing definitely makes a difference. Pretty good bargain from what I can tell and will bridge the gap nicely until I can buy a proper top quilt from UGQ.
Slept in the new bag last night at 70 degrees with a quick zipper removal and am pleased with my purchase. Whether it will handle 35-40 deg is a question to me but it was worth the purchase just as a warmer weather quilt alone. Very nice.
Where did you get your CCF?
I finally got my bag today. Sounds like my order fell between the cyber cracks.
I really like how light and small it is compressed. About half the size of my other down mummy. For the fair weather camping I do it'll be fine.
One thing though is mine zips left. I was hoping it would be right. Were you guys able to pick your zipper side when buying it?
I've really enjoyed this string and it was the reason I picked up one of these bags. Definite difference in quality between in-store and buying online. IMO, the in-store ones have already been picked over by those of us in the know . If you want one, best bet is buying online and hope that the order picker person is a hanger!
I placed an order for one of these plus the free pad on Friday and should have it next week.
What is a good cheap source for down? Would it be worth opening one of these walmart bags and overstuffing it? If I could get a 20degree TQ for $100 + 4hrs of my labor and experimenting I would be very happy
I am in the midst of modding one of these bags to a top quilt. I shopped thrift stores for down to no avail.
I lucked into a vintage sleeping bag that was past its prime on eBay at a good price. Got nearly two pounds of good quality down that is at least 700 fill. When I measured the volume of 1 ounce it calculated to 800 fill if I did it correctly.
(I am working two of these WM bags to TQs and then two underquilts are next on my list of projects.)
I live in the South, so I don't really have to go for 20 degrees, but thought the torso area need a little more fill.
Since I didn't need the hood, I also extracted the down once I removed it and injected it into a torso baffle.
My wife also found a down throw pillow at a thrift store, but it is almost all feathers. I probably won't use it on the bags and UQs.
Some folks have bought down bed pillows for the down. Some of the cottage vendors also sell high quality down.
