Duck down is a lot cheaper but works.
It sounds like an interesting bag, especially for those who cringe at the prices of the high end stuff.
If that weight is anywhere close to the 1.5lbs and the temp rating anywhere under 40*, it would be a pretty good deal for quite a few.

Anyone have any thoughts on turning this into an underquilt?

Well I took the bait and ordered 2 online. Much smaller than my military system TQ I am using now and being a warm sleeper I think this combined with my 0 degree underquilt will get me to 0 if not even lower. And yes they are cheaper ordered online and sent to store.

Walmart Ozark Trails Down Sleeping Bag

Grabbed one today. I DON'T need another bag in this temp range but I was soo curious.. It may replace my Golite RS1+, depending on testing.

It does loft up well. Though the bag is in a compression sack, it isn't sold compressed but just stuffed so it is lofted pretty quickly, I would not be concerned.

    My initial observations:
Good design - draft tube, draft collar, grosgrain ribbon behind zipper, interior pocket
Bad design - relatively heavy shock cord on draft collar and hood cinch, with big cord locks. If using as a TQ, you will be able to shave several ounces by removing cord locks and/or shock cord.

I'll probably try it in the Smokies next weekend depending on forecast. As long as the projected lows for Townsend are 35+, this is coming - below that it will be my MH Ultralamina bag.

I bet that it will work out great for you. I hope so!

I use an older REI synthetic 35* sleeping bag as a 3-season TQ and it has worked perfectly. I wish it packed down as small as that down bag.

Keep us updated on how it works out!

    Take it easy,
