newbie from Northern VA - looking to pack hammock on bike trips

    Hello,

I met a couple guys (Loki and MacEntyre) at Uwharrie National Forest and decided I MUST have a hammock. I've been looking for a while but in a vacuum I can't decide what is best for me.

I'm hoping to find some guidance and maybe some other ultralight cyclists (bikepackers) who are able to pack hammocks instead of bivvys or tents.

At present, I'm considering the ENO doublenest - mostly because I have an REI gift card that will cover it. What I want to be able to do is replace my OR Highland Bivvy, sleeping bag, and pad with hammock, tarp and quilts. I don't think I can do it without a weight/volume penalty but I'd like to see if I can. I expect you folks are the ones who can help me.

I live in Warrenton, VA so I'd be stoked to meet up if there is a group in this area getting together. Any thoughts about the doublenest or a good alternative would be appreciated. I'm not a small dude, so I can't fool around with kid sized hammocks.

    Al

Welcome. I am over in Sterling VA.

I have both an ENO Dbl and a Hennessey. If you would like to swing by some time I will be happy to show you both and even let ya put your backside in them.

I went ahead and got a double nest and atlas straps but have not ordered a tarp yet....that decision is kind of daunting for some reason. I definitely want to check out the mahha - I will see if I can get to that. Is there a good chance of buying a tarp there? I heard vendors usually show up and peddle their wares.

Hello from Alexandria! I bikecamp using a Grand Trunk Skeeter Beater and a tent rain fly salvaged from an old tent. Switching from a tent to a hammock was a huge space saver and soooo much more comfortable waking up and rolling out of bed in the morning.

I missed the Fall MAHHA last year by two days We made better time than I expected. I need to check the dates for this spring.
Have you had a chance to try you hammock out?

Hi Leslie. I tried it out in the garage and it was awesome. Still looking for a tarp but I suspect it will be a huge weight savings over the bivvy I normally use. Besides....I hate that bivvy. I plan to get into the whole whoopie sling club too, I can see where that would be a big weight/bulk savings.

I think I have a family reunion the weekend of the spring mahha, but maybe I will make it out to another hang somewhere.

almaxey - you live in a great area for bike hammocking: Greenbrier, C&O, Great Allegheny Passage, W.&O.D. North Bend rail trails I've done.

We are looking at the York Heritage trail into Maryland for Easter week, but may change to different trails to bike depending on the weather. If its muddy, then the W&OD or up north Pennsy the Pine Creek Gorge.

I didn't think there was any place to camp on the WO&D but the greenbrier and C&O are awesome. I have only done them in a bivvy so going back in a hammock will be nice. I have some AT hiking planned this year and I want to do the Pittsburg to DC trip and then back on bike.

I'll have to check out the other trails you mentioned.
