Longer stitches are weaker and less likely to tear the base but allow for more movement and shifting in the base making it a little more difficult to seal it completely.

The grip clips are best for experimenting and finding where the tabs are best placed because they can be relocatted so easily.
    Great tip, Rev!

That is true Youngblood .... When it snows I often only use one of the tie outs of the two that I have on each side. That way there is less of a basin to catch the snow. I want to figure a way to have the tie out pulled out less for sleeping then a way to pull a line from the hammock to pull it out all the way for morning breakfast ..... I am going to work on that Rube Goldberg configuration soon. Fun.

I have a permanent loop of cord between the two tie outs on the same side, then a cord tied to the loop that can slide as needed when i tie off to something that is off center.
That way, I only use one cord on each side for the tie outs, & most of the time there is a limb or tree, or something to tie it to so that I don't even need a stake.
    Pretty quick & simple.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
