3rd party compatibility with a Clark

holla hangers, am thinking of pulling the trigger on a Clark. before I do some thing I would like clarified. first will the use of a 3rd party tarp (my case a Maccat) at all interfear with the hanging of the Clark? it looks like the goods at either end of the hammock are suppended form the tarp at built in connections but I may be mistaken. as always thanks for the help gents!

You don't have to buy a Clark with the built in tarp. Their tarps are pretty good, but are made from heavy silnylon. I have two Clarks, purchased without the tarps and I use Cuben Fiber tarps with them. Not had any issues and have survived several rain storms using these.

I agree, you do not need to use a Clark tarp.
I think that the Clark tarp on the North American or Tropical can be configured in ways that a different tarp may not be able to but any tarp can be hung separate from the hammock and used 'normaly'.

I tried the Clark tarps and immediately disliked them. Switched out to other tarps without any issues at all.

My, what prejudice, including some from such experienced campers, including one who tbomk doesn't care for the Clark hammock. !!!

Just what is the matter with the current XL and Vertex tarps, 2/3rds of the tarp line?

"Heavy" sil-nylon? I can't tell from weights and area of coverage that the silnylon Clark uses is in the least heavier than what WarbonnetOutdoors or others use.

If OP is determined to buy his Clark without the tarp, I hope he will do me, a community member, the favor of having the tarp drop-shipped to me instead. I will be happy to pay what Clark will allow him -- $50 --plus the secondary shipping cost. Actually, I'd prefer he order the XL upgrade for $20 more. I will gladly pre-pay him $70+ shipping for that tarp.

Specifically, the MacCat mentioned by the OP will work just fine. I used a Warbonnet BMJ for awhile, which would be very similiar in design to the MacCat, and it worked Ok but didn't give me quite the coverage I wanted.
If you already own a MacCat, but want to pick up an extra tarp, including the Clark tarp in your purchase would get you a very good tarp for not much money. IMHO, the Clark Vertex tarp is one of the best designs available.

A lot of high end vendors, like WarbonnetOutdoors, use silnylon for their tarps, which is why I don't buy them. Cuben Fiber is half the weight and as far as I can tell, holds up pretty good. I admit they won't take as much abuse as silnylon, but if you take just a little care with them, I think Cuben Fiber tarps will last quite a long time.

I own the clark vertex tarp and the warbonnet superfly, both seem to be of the same weight material, both work well. In fact the superfly was bought just because it has doors, not that it is "better" or "lighter" weight material. I too will be glad to reimburse you the $70 for the ungraded clark tarp if you don't want it. It is just too good a deal to pass up. My $0.02.
