Table Cloth Hammock whipping

wow never thought about just being able to overhand knot in my 60x126 tablecloth.. bet it helps with the length because i think they are too long and this could be the easiest trick to shortening..

anybody have thoughts have far down to make the knot for a 6ft person

I do not like nylon because it stretches and I associate that with loosening. ;-) Given the choices shown it would not seem to matter much for a straight whipping as that only hold the bundle together. On the other hand one stress's the material with the larks head knot or the hammock knot like Tijereyes video. For that I like something bigger than 7/64 amsteel so it spreads the load better on the material. If you look Tijereyes is using something like 1/4 in or 8 mm. Any soft high strength line will do. I use dacron or spectra because I have it.

The problem is that whatever line you use to be weight bearing needs to be strong enough to support at least 5x your weight. More is better. The other problem is to check for damage at the attachment point and see if there are any signs of stressing the cloth.

I should clarify -- I haven't actually done this yet with my hammocks; just found the youtube video. I don't plan for this to be the final method, either -- I was only going to use this for figuring out how long I want the hammock to be. Once I get that dialed in, I'll probably do either an end channel + mini spreader bar or a Knotty end channel version.

I've heard anywhere between 2-4 feet longer than you are tall. Personally I plan to experiment with the "quick-release" whipping in the video to figure out what is most comfortable for me.

For cord I like Type I paracord. Its thin and holds a knot well.

As far as dimensions, 60x126" raw cut is my go to. 6'0" 240lbs.

Whipping is simple... And quick... Also allows changes as you try different things down the road... Mine looks something like this when I am done...

I tried it tonight; the temporary method didn't work nearly as well as I hoped for a full size hammock. A whipping like Brute shows above is what I ended up using.. it's still easier to untie and rewhip than a channel sewn one would be.

I don't know where the masterful brute got his diagram and all from but that is the method I use and it works great... I think some are too afraid of the ground...

That's my diagram and photo... Made it on my phone because I knew it would come in handy for thongs like this... That's actually my daughter's hammock that I did that one on... I just bought her some neon pink rip stop for her stuff sack...

I only leave a tail of a couple of inches above the knot. But I work that knot pretty good to make sure it's tight. Takes 30 seconds to do (though a couple if minutes to undo if I want to retie for some reason). In my experience the longer I leave it the better. I'm 5'5" and an 11' hammock is a nice flat lay.
