    Thumbs up diy down UQ

the title says it i'm going to make an UQ. i have a boat load of down i don't know the fill power it is comming out of an old down mattress pillow top. it's going to be a sewn through quilt, i know, i know baffels are best but i just dont want to fool with them. I'm going to sew the baffels both ways, leingh and with to make a checkerd pattern if you will. i think i have got it worked out (in my head at least). Wish me luck this will be my first Down D.I.Y. project.
It's not the fall im scared of, it's the sudden stop at the end!!!

Recycled down is awesome. Saving the world one feather at a time.

I did something similar and it has worked well for me so far.

    ?

For your calculations, are you assuming a fill power of about 550fp or are you just eye-balling it?

Has the tag been cut off? It usually says the fill power on it.

I decided that im gonna make it like a Zepplin UQ. I'm planning on doing 12oz of down in six chanels. I cut planning on a 1" rolled hem/channel so an extra 3" all the way round. This did NOT work out as planned. In pic #2 you see that i have folded and sewn the corners at 45*. Then rolled and pinned, it wasn't a true 45.the chanels didn't line up in the corners. So, i fooled with it for an hour until i just made it work. This made the hems smaller and the main body slightly larger, so then the hem didn't hide the raw edges of the corner like i had planned. How could have i done this diffrently? I am waiting on a scale so ill know how much dowin is in it. I'll get picks of it again after i finish and give it a test...

Don't get discouraged! You are doing a fine job. Remember your goal is a functional quilt that will keep you warm. As you lay in it on a cold night, feeling all nice and toasty, you won't care what the seams look like.

The best thing is to get some scrap material and sew your ideas and see how things turn out. Modify your ideas and sew up another scrap. It's a learning process.
