Which part is the shiny side?

Jeez that sounds like a dumb question.

But I have 1.1 ripstop for DIY gear supply and it is very very hard to tell! I got the Olive color which seems to be shiny no matter the side. I have the shell cut out and I am getting ready to begin thread injecting. But I want to make sure I have the right sides facing outward.

Is there a test I can do to check which side i shiny? I tried utilizing the sun and laying eye level on the floor and flipping a corner and comparing, but wow, depending which way I move my head they both shine!

    Heeeelp.

Does it matter if the shiny side is on the inside or the outside?

Typically the shiny side would be the inside or wrong side of the fabric. Of course it depends on what you're making as to if it really matters. For down filled objects, such as quilts, you want the right (dull) side out as the wrong (shiny) side has been calendared to be "down proof".

Does it really matter? No not really, but that is the standard way of doing things.

Some fabrics are "finished" on only one side...those fabrics are pretty easy to tell which side is finished. Many 1.1 rip-stops are finished on both sides. Pick one and go to work.

It is 1.1 for a down top quilt. I keep thinking ahah! This must be the shiny side only to flip it over and then say, well jeez, the other side looks shiny now.

I am doing this charade as we collaborate lol!

    I specifically bought http://www.backwoodsdaydreamer.com/p...hable-fabrics/

The olive green seconds. Which does not specify if it is calendared on one side....perhaps it is both sides and I am not going crazy....

If you can't tell the difference, it's probably calendared both sides. Either way it's not going to matter.

Short version...you just ran out of excuses, so start sewing.

I used that same fabric (olive green 1.1 from DIY gear supply), and I had the same question. I emailed Scott and he said the fabric is calendared on both sides, they both are the same.

    Nice fabric!

They are all lying to you.....really one side is "shinier"......keep looking.

Sorry. I can feel for you, I spent about an hour going back and forth with the black M50 a few weeks back. I think I was under every light in the house.

    lol thanks jwright!

I hope thats not true cause I have 50% of the baffles sewn! LOL! I mean, if there was a shiny side, the shiny sides that I thought were shiniest are on the inside. But I have faith!
