I'm curious if any hangers have experimented with steel-cabled tarp ridgelines? There must be some way to rig up a strong and light steel cable that would deflect those falling branches? Just a thought.

I'm pretty sure that hasn't been discussed here on the forum before. What gauge/thickness of wire/cable do you have in mind?

I don't have the slightest clue. That's why I just threw it out there. I suppose it's possible, don't know about practical.

Yes, you will be dealing with this for years, as we were in the 90s. Those broken limbs will be hanging in the trees for a long time, always a threat. Some damaged trees won't finally fall for several years. And your trails will be trashed until some one manages to clear them with chain saws and work crews. I hate that this happened--- I hate ice storms.

I miss some things about the midwest but ice storms are not one of them!
There was a bad one in the late 70s and I remember walking with my dad on a trail on our back acreage and seeing tree top after tree top hung up in the tops of other trees. It was a PAIN clearing all that up.

IMO: Carbon dioxide is plant food, and we (mankind) aren't even making enough of the stuff to feed a few extra trees.

sure am glad living in florida means i have no idea what an ice storm is.
