    MEC Tarps - Guide, Scout

    Hey guys,

Just wondering if any other hangers north of the border have any experience with the MEC tarps? I'm taking a trip to the Barrie shop soon and was hoping to pick up a tarp local (save me on shipping costs).

The Scout is a really decent price but I'm worried it won't provide enough coverage for my WBBB at only 114"x82".

On the other hand, the Guide tarps seem like they would almost be too big, running up to 153"x114"...

Anyone have any experience with these? Thanks!

Haven't used one for hanging but have spent time under a Sil guide tarp. Good quality.

I chose to spend a few extra bucks to get a hammock specific tart (or two) from one of the vendors here.

They are good quality but are still rectangular. The Scout would be too small for hammock coverage. A silicone Guide tarp wil cost you $123.00 after HST. A Warbonnet Superfly would cost you around $145.00 with shipping. (if you do what I do and ask for basic USPS shipping via an e-mail request) So far I've never paid duty on any gear I've bought from Warbonnet.

IMO the catenary cuts, integrated doors and side pull outs are worth the extra cash if it means I can pitch it taut, close the doors in bad weather and have more head room due to the side pull outs. Also, the Superfly has a grosgrain sewn ridgeline which provides some extra strength whereas the MEC tarp does not. Just some things to think about.

Thanks again guys, you've all been very helpful! I'll keep my eyes open for something suitable. Would have sprung for the WB Edge tarp but looks like he stopped making them, at least for now.

It isn't very likely that I'll be doing any winter hanging so for now just something to keep my dry will do the trick

I do like MEC gear and it'll serve you well for sure. The Guide tarp is big enough that you could close off the ends if need be.

The superfly weighs about the same as the scout silicone. If you can get cheaper shipping I would take it over the guide tarp. My only problem would be I would want a bb dl 1.1 and superfly.

I do have a mec scout it might work with a cub or scout hh but too short for an adult size hammock.

I have used Integral Designs tarps and they are very good quality but they are straight edged and in any kind of wind they can be noisy and possibly self destructing if the wind blows long and hard enough. This is a problem the MEC tarps share too but if wind isn't a concern, then go for it. The Scout doesn't sound too bad, but its heavy for the coverage you are getting but the price is definitely great.

If you have no tarp, just get a blue poly tarp and turn it into a hex cat cut hammock tarp for $20-30 (there is a link on this site) and save up for the tarp you really want. There is definitely no shortage of great specialty companies making hammock specific tarps. Check out the manufacturers' websites....

I bit the bullet, added a Warbonnet Mamajamba to my order (since it hasn't shipped yet).
I'll hit MEC for the biners and cordage anyways.. been meaning to look at their selection of kayaks for the spring too, might get something on winter clearance still

That's the problem with MEC (actually with the vendors here too). Every time I go, I end up a lot poorer.
