    Footbox help needed please

So I've watched the youtube vids posted by TZ brown about how he constructs a footbox hammock, and while he shows plenty about cutting and hemming the fabric triangle that will be the footbox, I'm a little hazy on how this gets attached to the body of the hammock.

Are the two shorter edges of the triangle simply sewn to the edge of the hammock at the location where my feet tend to stick out/off the sides? If so, will this create a situation where I can only enter/exit/sit on the edge that doesn't have the footbox so I don't put too much strain on the now-shortened footbox edge?

I'm thinking about adding a footbox to my DIY double 1.9, as I'm 6'3" and it seems my feet want to pop out and over the edge of my hammock.

Any advice or details on footbox construction will be much appreciated. I'm still a pretty new to this and have never had a chance to examine a mass-produced hammock with footbox, so all I have to go on are the TZ brown youtube videos. Also, if you know of any other youtube videos on this subject, please let me know.

    Thanks,
    scroungetech

The assumptions in your second paragraph are correct. There is a good reason why this isn't totally mainstream and not too widely raved about. It should help solve your issue, but I would try a knotty mod first. Lots easier to do and just as functional.

To me it sounds like your DIY might be a hair short for you. I am 6'2" so I can sympathize. What I recommend is finding a hammock that is somewhere around 64" wide by 11' long. That just so happens to be my lucky number when it comes to hammock size. My feet actually have some room to spare in one this size, however your results may vary. That's why there's a hundred ways to skin this cat....

Thanks for the quick reply Fish! I was just getting ready to ask if the knotty mod might be a better way to go, and you beat me to it. Much appreciated! My hammock was 10.75 feet before I gathered the ends, so I'll need to look at overall length in it's post-gathered state.

Thank knotty, his idea. But on a serious note, it really is a pretty easy mod to do and may give the results you want.

Modifying an existing hammock with a footbox like I used is not really going to work very well.
Adding / sewing the 2 sides of the triangle to the side of the hammock reduces the hammock length to whatever the top side of the triangle is.

Yes you do need to be concerned about side stress exiting on the footbox side, that is why I put a cord into the side hem of the hammock and footbox.

The real benefit of the footbox for me was reducing the overall length required to hang the hammock. My feet are nearly under the end knot so OAL is about 8 feet.

For modding a hammock the knotty mod works best. It keeps your gear inside the hammock and does not reduce the length of the lay when you are in it.

Hope that helps, ask questions if you need more info

And by the way Scroungetech, welcome to the group and the DIY fun

+1 on the Knotty Mod. It's an easy add on with a couple of strips of grosgrain and some shock cord with a cord lock.
