On the knot.....not on the toggle

Finally got a few minutes to hang the hammock last night and rest in the back yard. It was pretty dark but I was able to hang the hammock pretty quickly. Made sure the whoppies were on the knot and not the toggle. Thanks Shug. Hung there enjoying the night and my daughter comes outside looking for me. We talk for a while and I say hop in. Well............lets just say the collision with the ground ended my relaxing hang. I had used some pencils as the toggles and evidently when she hopped in the whoppie landed on the toggle. Fun times for sure. After the surprise we got a good laugh and a good lesson.

She'll be telling that story forever...good memories.

Some folks here get creeped out with a MSH for this very reason. One time I looked up after jumping in and the toggle was almost parallel to the whoopie I still don't know how it held.

An alternative method is to tie a biner to the strap and attach the whoopie to the biner...like in this video.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXYOw...2ezahgyu0I1Tkw

    Works fine.

The whoopie may not have landed on the toggle. Pencils aren't strong enough, that's all. (I still haven't figured out how I would hang the whoopie on the toggle instead of the knot if I wanted to.)

I also agree that the pencils probably aren't strong enough. I've used sticks that had strap indents on them after hanging. I've also heard of people (large people) breaking the carbon fiber arrow toggles. The toggle doesn't support your weight but it does undergo some strong compressive forces.

It holds 1/2 the weight applied to the line or 1/4 of the weight in the hammock

I have stressed my hang.......full impact unicycle rams at 1:13.
The toggle and marlin-spike held. Aluminum Slurpee straw as toggle. Knot is on the knot...not on the toggle.
    Held.
    Surprised.

Shug, that's some rigorous research, and nice music, too.

A confession: I took a newbie backpacking, and we camped at a shelter, so we hung his hammock in the shelter. There weren't any beams to attach the hammock to, so I poked the loop of the whoopie through a crack in the wall, and went around to the outside of the shelter and put a toggle through the loop. This is the only time I managed to put all the weight on the toggle. It was a section of aluminum tent pole - much stronger than an arrow shaft, I think. It broke, and my friend (I think he's still my friend) landed hard.
