    Snakes on a Hang!

No, this isn't about Samuel L. Jackson doing a thru hike, just a bit of a paranoid thought...

Please forgive me if this sounds a bit silly, but I was curious as to the odds of a snake getting into a hammock. I plan to do some backpacking this summer, and I'm not the biggest lover of snakes. If I were tent camping, I would be a bit less concerned but I don't have a door on my hammock. Of course, I''m not too worried while I am in my hammock; rather when I set a base camp and come back to it later.

I figure that the lines and straps make for a difficult journey to enter a hammock, and when I have a bug netting up it would be pretty tough anyhow. And with a tarp, no kamikaze snakes would find their way from a tree.

Okay, so the chances are slim, but not impossible. Anyone ever heard of any situation where a snake found your hammock as comfortable as you do?

Being there is less cover for a snake to be interested in, I would be much more concerned with a tent in any circumstance.... Anything is possible though...
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..

Not sure where you plan to go, but the venomous snakes that we have around here in the south east don't climb much. You will very rarely find any of our venomous snakes above ground, so your chances of finding one in your hammock are slim to none.

    +1

Halfway through the OP I glanced at his location thinking he was in a jungle somewhere.

If a snake makes his way across your suspension line, under your tarp and into your hammock you might as well say 'hello' because my guess is he can talk as well.

It's pretty much a non-issue in NC at least. The only two snakes I have first hand experience seeing climbing in bushes have been the Black Rat Snake and the Green Snake. Neither of them are poisonous although you don't want to grab a BR by the tail as they have a rather stinky gland back there and it doesn't wash off easily (don't ask ). Now if you're lucky enough to see a Green Snake count your blessings. I use to find them all the time when I was a kid but have only found one in the last twenty years ... one of my favorites too.

Just don't think you're going to find either of them trying to get into a hammock. If just the thoughts bother you though ... invest in a bug net or get an enclosed hammock like a Blackbird or Hennessey.

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

Yeah, the whole idea of cuddling up to a warm body probably isn't good for the species, so doubtfult that there has ever been an issue of it happening.

What makes you think you'd be safer in a tent? You don't think they'd nudge the zipper if they wanted to get in? I totally see them being more inclined to do that to get at whatever might be in the tent food-wise.

Which is my other, and real phobia.

I know that there is bigger chance of stepping on a snake getting out of the hammock than the chance of cozying up with one when I turn in at night.

Good point about the tent zipper, but I've always closed the double zipper at the top for that very reason

The poor man is worried about snakes getting into his hammock and the basic gist of the posts I've read is "Don't worry. They'd probably get you in your tent too." Aren't we a reassuring bunch!

Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."
