TN> GSM> May 7-9: Smoky Mountains Summer Kickoff

Hey guys. Is anyone interested in a 2 night trail or loop? Thats the day after my finals and would love to get out into the GSM right after before my summer job starts up.

I have no specific location decided yet so any suggestions would be great. Something from an easy 10 mile loop to even 15 or 20 miles each day if we got ambitious. Let me know.

I would strongly recommend Maddron Bald on the Cosby side of the park. 17-18 mile loop using Gabes Mountain Trail, Maddron Bald Trail, and the Snake Den Ridge Trail. The bald is cool, but nothing spectacular. But the old growth forest and the Albright Grove loop are really neat.

The best part of that side of the park is the seclusion. We did this trail in the end of June last year and didn't see a soul for almost two days. Felt like the park was our personal playground.

I'd would agree with what PhiDelt said about the Cosby side, but I'd be cautious about the trail head parking in Cocke County. I was at Maddron Bald and Albright Grove last Thanksgiving. One cool hike.. There also a waterfall depending which route you take. I might be interested in joining you, but I got concert I want go to in Asheville on May 9th and I'm planning a trip to Panthertown before that weekend.

What about a trip to Big Creek? Hike 6 miles on day one to Walnut Bottom campsite, then ascend Mt. Sterling the next day? You have the option of taking short way to Sterling or the long way VIA Gunters Fork. There's also a hidden waterfall on Gunters Fork.

Any of these trails sound great. The lady doesn't like hiking out on my own so if any of you guys would want to hang during that time on the trails you listed just let me know. I really love the Cosby area btw

I would love to do the Cumberland Trail in Campbell County during that time...we could divert into Royal Blue for some of the trip!

I need to get Eagle Creek and Jenkins Ridge some time this Spring. Rain could be a problem though as Eagle Creek has about 17 crossings. Basically, it's Cades Cove to the AT then down Eagle, follow Fontanna to Hazel Creek, then Jenkins to the AT. I think it's a bit over 35 miles, but lots of elevation change.
