So if pads are uncomfortable, then there are only a few options for cheap-ish underquilts for those of us not skilled or equipped for DIY?

Simplest DIY looks to the be dejoha's DIY, No-Sew, 2-layer, 2/3 Poncho Liner UQ.

I'm not against DIY but I want minimal size as well, not condusive to DIY usually.

I've been giving serious consideration to the tewa. Price and weight are hard to beat, though any of the ones you listed are going to be good. If you go the tewa, pay the extra $10 and get the extra ounce of down filling. Should help get you into the 30's.

I was looking at the te-wa and it doesn't look nearly as nice as the Hammock Gear Phoenix and it's barely any more $.

Not sure what you mean by nice, by all accounts both uq's are quality items, with similar temp ratings and weights, the tewa just happens to be a little lighter and a little less expensive.
