Hm, I have a TempurPedic Bed, that I love. I also have a TempurPedic Travel Bed. It weight is ton.
My TempurPedic is funny in the cold, it gets very stiff, when it warms up it is soft. I have a travel pillow that rolls up to fit in my pack. If it is cold outside, the pillow does not flatten out it just lays there rolled up. When I lay on it, it unrolls and is soft around my neck. The travel bed needs a rolling golf bag cart to move it around. I only take it when I am staying in hotels.
I have a very nice REI Pad, I think it is a ThermaRest with REI logo. It is really great padding for ground sleeping. I used it in my hammock in the beginning then decided I did not need it.
Memory foam is not great when it is warm out, because it does not breathe.
Thanks Ironfish45,I won't bother to drag it along in the summer.
I used a 4" memory foam pad in a small tent trailer I have. In cold Wx ( freezing and below) it goes like Ironfish says- stiff, and doesn't bounce back. Also I found it to be very cold, sort of like lying in wet sand.
I don't think it would work in the hammock.

Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem.

I think the beauty of memory foam is it squishes where the weight is and doesn't where its not and therefore evens the pressure all 'round. The squishy parts a problem in the cold, because you want to maintain a space between where you are and the cold air is, and in that space, you don't want the air moving at all. Closed cell foam isn't about squishing, its about not squishing. I think...
Thanks guys, I think I will put more insulation in my PLUQ,with my down mummy bag and merino wool base layer I should be fine.I am also thinking about a pair of Grizzbeaks with my Coleman catalytic heater or Mr.Buddy propane.Weight on this trip is not an issue we car camp to a base and go our seperate ways fishing during the day.I have a ccf pad but don't like the stiffness of it.
An inexpensive option that is a little softer than the regular CCF pads that I have used to extend my insulation is the walmart blue egg crate foam pad. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trai...p-Pad/19890889
It is a more pliable material than the standard blue pad and more comfortable in the hammock.
