base camp pack idea

While I was killing some time at Walmart I stumbled across an Outdoor Products Packable Day Pack. The pack cost $6.99 (listed at almost $20.00 on their website, so buy it in store) and looked interesting so i picked it up. It weighs just under 5 oz. (a little heavy, but not bad at all for the price) and is able to be reverse packed into a small ball (a little smaller than a baseball). My intended use was throw it in my pack as a day pack when I set up a base camp. It is capable of carrying 2 meals, water, and my first aid kit(I always get stuck as the first aid guy). After some careful thought though, i realized i can use this bag to replace my stuff sack on my sleeping bag, so after setting up base camp I will have a day pack and have saved a little weight. I havent seen anyone do this idea yet, but I would not be suprised if it has already been done (I apologize if I have stepped on anyone's creative toes). Another thought was just to sew some light straps on a stuff or compression sack to achieve the same thing and probably be a little lighter (not that 5 oz is too outrageous). Personally, I would prefer better straps, some with a little padding. Should be easy enough to add. Hmmm, may have to see if I can find one........RR

I think its a great idea but the problem with leaving your pack behind is the increased thefts that are being seen on the trail now days. If you plan to leave your gear behind, I would do a really good job of hiding it.

I hid my gear really good one time(or at least I thought i did) and later bumped into a hiker who asked me down the trail if that was my gear hidden off the trail. I was astounded that he found my gear. I had buried it under leaves and behind a large rock 200ft off trail. If you leave your gear behind, just be prepared to loose it, because it could easily happen now days.
