hangin' in the whites

Greetings!

I'm planning a nobo thru hike in 2014. I'd like to use my hammock the entire time. can any of you nice folks give any advice or info regarding hanging in the white mountains (or any other problem areas)? I'll go to ground if absolutely necessary but I'd like to avoid shelters at all costs.

From what I understand, with the exceptions of SMNP, some private lands one passes through and a few other shelters outside of SMNP which do not allowing tenting (but are easily avoidable if planned correctly), then pretty much as long as you can find trees you can hang on the AT

Hanging in the Whites is not a problem generally speaking, with the following exceptions.

There are a few small designated wilderness areas. Camping is prohibited within them. But with a little bit of planning, they could be easily traversed within a day. These are clearly shown on forest service maps.

Then there is the Presidential Range which will take a couple of days above the tree line.

Lastly, the higher elevations do not have trees that will support hanging. Those trees are evergreens they're very small and scrubby and compacted close together. Stick to the lower elevations for hanging.

Thanks guys. I don't mind having to work for a decent hang spot but I really want to avoid those shelters.
