    The straps look good.

Looks like you are using cotton rope with those straps. Cotton rope will not take the stress. Need to get some amsteel or use straps on the hammock.

I will have to check into it. Never heard of amsteel. What does it generally cost per foot in a diameter best suited to hammocks.

Looks good. What you are using on the two rings is called the garda hitch and while it is very effective, the compression on the rope can cause damage to the rope so be aware of that. What some people do is forgo any hardware and just feed the webbing through the sewn loop. For large trees they do several wraps before finally going through the sewn loop.

Good to know the proper name and it's limitations. Thank you Bubba there is a lot more to consider about this hammock stuff than I thought.

No problem. This is the place to get the info. I also noticed your hammock has spreader bars and you said you wanted to take it camping. Have you slept in it overnight? I ask because spreader bar hammocks while comfortable puts you in the curved position which can be hard on the knees.. A gathered end hammock with the person laying on a diagonal or a bridge hammock both give a flatter lie which is more conducive to all night sleep.

BTW, Shug is pronounced as if you are saying sugar (which is part of the origin of his nickname)

It is a spreader but I do sleep diagonal on it . I have no experience with anything else. It was more a question of throwing something comfortable together on the cheap. The whole rig cost no more than $80.

As long as you are comfortable, that's all that matters. HYOH (Hang your own hang) as we say around here.

I dont think that Amsteel would be a good use here. Read somewhere that the pinch stress was not good for the rope. At any rate Amsteel is very strong nautical rope. You can use as small as 7/64 and be safe. Look up whoopie slings on youtube or on here to see how most use it. And one of the good places to get it is http://www.reddenmarine.com/rope-cor...teel-blue.html.
