    DL 11ft Hammock

Had this stupid idea in my head. Couldn't get it out. Hard to sleep. Today I made a 11 ft DL with two cat cuts. Have an opening for a pad and /or blanket. Inside I put ties so I can attach blankets without them slipping around.

Since I'm a left sleeper I put the cuts on the upper left and lower right. Helps with the loose fabric.

Feels great, tried it with a thermarest pad and wow. A nice flat lie. I have a wider pad I'm wanting to try it with too.
I used my eggplant inside and an olive nylon for the outer.
I channeled it and sewed up an inch tuck in each corner to tighten the sides. I like it!

The picture is with the thermarest in it

Haven't told the wife I made another. Hopefully my mind shuts down and I can sleep tonight

That looks awesome. I just finished a DL 11.5ft hammock but haven't had the chance to use it with a pad yet. Yours looks a little neater than mine.

I'm one of those types that sees cool stuff online (hammocks in this case) and want to buy them. My wife keeps me in line so I try to DIY and so far so good. I'm looking at an integrated bugnet... Maybe lol

I plan on making a 11 footer also. I found some 1.1oz ripstop for cheap. Any idea what kind of weight a DL with 1.1 would hold safely?

Very cool! Thanks for the pics. I've been thinking about making an 11ft double layer too. Now I'll have to.

Out in the park today. My friend tried it out and he's super jealous.

This may be a noob question, but what is the advantage of a cat cut hammock? I get the cat cut tarps to allow for a tighter pitch. But why a cat cut hammock? Just to get rid of some of the excess fabric along the side? How much fabric are you getting rid of? Is it just aesthetics or is there an actual weight savings?

Don't get me wrong. I think your hammock looks great. It's just that I'm about to start in on my own DIY hammock. It never occurred to me to make cat cuts along the sides. Every cut is an opportunity for me to make a catastrophic mistake. I just finished a winter tarp with cat cuts and that was kind of scary making those long sweeping cuts into that expensive silnylon. Fortunately, I didn't screw it up (yet). (I haven't actually hung it up outside and tested it, either.) Don't know how much I want to push my luck. ;-)

A couple reasons for the cuts. Helps with a bit of visibility. Tightens up the hem a bit. Less flapping in the wind. So with me laying on my back I cut the upper left and the lower right. You could flip the hammock to make it work for a righty.
Tightening the sides is more from where I take it in an inch at the corners.
