Authentic military 2 inch wide cotton webbing

I have a giant roll of 2 inch cotton webbing that I know is an actual military product. It almost feels like canvas but is very pliable.

I know that cotton absorbs water, can mildew, not as strong as synthetic materials, and will degrade over time. But I was thinking of making some tree straps with this by taking two layers and sewing them together into one piece hoping to make it stronger.

I am unable to find specs of tensile strengths on the web. So I thought I might try it since the 1000 foot roll was free.

What are your thoughts and opinions on this idea?

I have no idea how well it'll hold up but anything is worth trying I'm sure someone will know.

Not meant for much weight, a backpack or belt maybe, but you can try anything. That stuff is soft and about an 1/8" so sewing double you're gonna have a fairly bulky kit. I think that some sort of green seatbelt would be a better alternative.

    Good luck.

I used 2" cinch straps (6 total) to pull a disabled M-113A2 (13T + cargo) across the desert at the National Training Center (Ft. Irwin, CA) one night (summer of '85 or '86 if anyone is interested). Didn't want the vehicle to get "captured" by the OPFOR and they were the only thing available at the time. It gave up after about 5 miles. The math geniuses here are welcome to figure out the peak load(s) but I'm guessing they were pretty high. So I say, give it a try (over something soft).
If it's stupid but works, it isn't stupid.

You can surely try it, but I second the idea of setting up over something soft (mattress or something).

One thing you'll need to consider is that cotton will rot/break down and may fail without warning. It's also very susceptible to moisture, and will hold lots of water if it rains.

I think it would make decent tie-down straps, traditional pack straps, or tump line straps or something. If you decide it's strong enough and useful for tree straps, you may want to figure out a simple, easily repeatable design that can be replaced easily if it rots/fails/breaks down.

I think I am just going to pat the few bucks and get regular tree straps. Just wondering what I am going to do with all this extra webbing. I have tons of it. haha maybe I can make lots of belts.

Thanks for your thoughts and considerations!!!
