    Tell me about your first...

So I'm about to make my first under quilt purchase and I have to say that it's been my hardest decision so far. 3/4, full length and 100 different temperature ratings to choose from.

What did most of you start off with and would you do it differently knowing what you know now?

I started with a full length synthetic. Rated 32 but I am a very warm sleeper so I got it to the low single digits and think I could have went cooler. I now have a full length down and love love love it. It is a 0 and I vent it if it is warmer than I need. If I started over I may have saved up a bit longer and started with just due to its size stuffed and weight.

I started off with a WB Yeti 3s. I don't regret it. It takes me down to about -2c.
There were allot fewer choices in 09. I might be drawn to a HG quilt or Wilderness logics or Underground quilts if i was to buy today. All the cottage folks make quality stuff and you would probably be happy with any one of them. As far as temp rating goes i would buy for the season you'll be out in the most. Generally that means a 3 season, so a 20 degree quilt or 3s yeti, that ballpark. Having said that it seems most folks also have quilts for other seasons as well. Good luck

So do you use it during the hot months vented open?

40 HG phoenix. Before that I was like a bird just gathering things in the hammock to sleep on. To do it again (if I wasn't doing a set per season) it would be a 20 for greater cross coverage.

I was actually hoping you'd reply being a fellow Canuck. I've been leaning towards the 20 or as I like to say a -6 in real temperature I just don't want something that gets to hot and I'm not able to vent.

That is the plan. That or I have even moved it over to one side to slow the wind movement while still keeping away the CBS. I also have a few different rated TQs to go with.

I don't do a lot of summer camping, but I have used my HG 20* Phoenix (w/2 oz. overstuff) up to 70* F (21 Celsius) overnight low without venting, and I've also taken it down to 13* Fahrenheit (-10 C).

I also have an HG 0* Incubator but I've never carried that in warmer temps, though it has kept me warm down to 3* Fahrenheit (-16 Celsius).

I started with a couple KAQ and used them through the first winter. I have since purchased a couple Flamethrower and te-wa quilts. If I was starting over again, I would start with the partial, down quilts. They seem to fit my needs most. The 30* quilts are also the best temp ratings for most of my camping. (They have worked for me from the teens to the 60's.)
I would also purchase from Mike and Paul again too. They make good gear and they are good camp company.
