I can relate. I only marked "military" because I got kicked out of the Cub Scouts; didn't figure it should count. I beat up the den leader's kid (Mike) and would do it again; he had it coming. Alas, I was not invited to return. I had just gotten my Webelo patch too, dang it!
Trust nobody!
I've been camping with my Scout troop since I was 12. At 29, I'm still going camping with them every month, and go to meetings every week. Earned my Eagle in '97, have been ASM since 1998. My wife and I have a 4 year old girl, and a boy on the way, so I'll finally have a kid in the Troop in a few years.
All of us Scoutmasters are in hammocks these days, as are 3 of our oldest boys. Here's a picture of Scoutmaster HQ at Lake Wateree this past summer (we do one water skiing trip each year).
Most of us are in ENO hammocks, but I'm selling my pro-link doublenest as soon as I can to get a BlackBird.

Gee Ramblinrev, you should have had my experience then. We'd go on camping trips in the Philippines and wake up in the morning with monkey tracks across our sleeping bags.
Tent camping then on cots or the ground.

My camping experience was all with my family and that was extraordinary. We priimitve canoe camped in the Daks most years. I grew up in a canoe and learned a tremendous amount from those times.
No the scout stuff was all other stuff which I have gone into in other threads and don't feel the need to rehash here. Suffice it to say if the same things were going on now and I knew about it... people would go to jail.
Some of that old culture still seems to be around but at least it may be tempered by fear of prosecution now.

I was a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout. Went into the Marine Corps. Now I am a Cub Scout Leader and a Ast Scout Master as well as help out wirth the District and Council training teams.
I started camping when I was a kid on family vacations and have been doing it ever since. I have always loved the outdoors and walking. I did the hunting thing for a while but got bored with just sitting around waiting for a deer to show up so I started backpacking, and now I see deer all of the time.
Never was in the service but do have 1 son serving in the Marine's presently deployed to Afganistan.
I was assistant scoutmaster when he was growing up
Woodbadge is one of the more important experiences I have had. (NE-III-168) You will learn a great amount that you will use in many things outside of scouting. Once you complete your ticket, you should find out how your council selects it's woodbadge staff. Try to get on staff! I got more out of being on staff (NE-III-177)than I did in taking the course, and that is saying alot. By the way BEAVERS RULE!
If you move to Canada your daughter can start in Beavers in September. We've been co-ed for a decade now.
Military...no.
Scouts...yes
Active scout (1969-1975)
Eagle Scout (1975)
Explorer Post (1974-1977 with a year as President)
OA (1974)
I was as Asst. Scoutmaster throughout college and for the first couple years out of school in a neighboring town of my first job before starting a troop in the small town I lived in. Got married, moved and was out of scouts for about 10 years till my first son was old enough to join Cubs.
Signed him up for Cubs and was immediately made Cubmaster (4 years), younger son joined Cubs then Comm. Ch. (2 years).
Rejoined Boy Scouts in 95 and have been active in the same troop since as Asst. Scoutmaster (2 years), Comm. Ch. (2 years), Scoutmaster (5 years), then returned to Asst. Scoutmaster to present. Older son made Eagle in 2002, younger son dropped out as a Star Scout when scouting became "uncool".
I have been to the National Jamboree in 1977 as a youth staff, led a jamboree contingent as Scoutmaster in 2001 when I was able to take both of my sons to it. Led a Philmont contingent in 2004. was on staff at 2005 Jamboree and plan on being there in 2010 for the 100th Anniversary of the BSA.
Woodbadge (I used to be an "Owl"), Silver Beaver.
I've enjoyed every minute of it. I loved being a Scoutmaster but I must say it also feels great not to have the full responsibility of a Scoutmaster these days. The campouts are much more relaxing too.
I've recruited several adults and youth to hammocking.
