Repair Help

I don't know anything about repair or replace but I'd love to hear the story.

Have sewing capability but looking for best way to reinforce the rip. Should I use a grosgrain strip to hold the two sides of the rip together or just sew the two sides back together after folding over for strength?? other thoughts?

Sewing the two sides together would shorten the material in relation to the inner layer. As a result, the inner layer will not take as much stress if any which in turn puts all the stress on the outer layer. For safety, I think you need two complete and even layers so replacing the bottom layer seems like the best course of action to me.
