First time

Hello I think I am ready to buy my first hammock. Is there a good one to start with? I plan on camping short trips at first. Then hopefully longer ones out of our area after that. Any info to get started would be much appreciated. Thanks!!!

Hello neighbor, welcome to HF! I also am a new member to the HF community and to hammocking. Although for about a year now i have been researching hammocks and have found alot of great information on several hammock brands, (Hennessy Hammocks, Warbonnet Blackbird Hammocks, Speer Hammocks, Jacks are Better Hammocks, EMO Hammocks, Grand Trunk and more.) Its hard to go wrong with any of these brands, all you can really do is research each a little watch a few setup videos of each and try to find the one that best fits you. After all my research i ordered a Warbonnet Blackbird Double XLC 1.1. The thing that sold me on WBBB was the added comfort of the footbox and the bugnet that is always attached or can be fully removed. Also Warbonnet Blackbird hammocks are made here in the USA. Welcome to HF and good luck with finding your first hammock!

Welcome to the asylum!! I would recommend going to tableclothsfactory dot com and ordering a 60" x126" taffeta rectangle tablecloth and then look up how to gather the end to make a dirt cheap, very comfortable hammock, in my opinion. I bought a $40 hammock from REI and, although it was OK, it was a bit small among other issues, and I feel like I could have easily given up because of it. I wish someone would have recommended the DIY tablecloth tome from the beginning. It makes a world of difference if you get a good, proper sized, comfy hammock to start with.

good suggestions above; but how about attending a group hang in your area? You'll meet lots of folks who will let you try their hammocks and probably make some new friends too. Best part? HF group hangs encourage folks with tents too - so why not try it - even if you just drop by for a Saturday afternoon?

Hi and welcome from Tennessee! You have had a lot of good advice on a first hammock already, and as you can see people do have different opinions. I would recommend a Hennessy Expedition as your first hammock, just because it comes with everything you need in one purchase--hammock, tree straps, bug net, and especially tarp. They are good hammocks, and user friendly for beginners. I would probably buy a used one, to save some $. And then once you are comfortable with it, if you want something else, Hennessys hold their value well, you could "trade up" (although I am still in a Hennessy. Haven't found a reason to trade at all.)
