Hey Adam, now you have a Shmoncho made of shmil-nylon to add to your Shmubbermaid collection.
Here’s a home test that is easy to do:
Materials:
Baby Bottle
Carbonated Water
Fabric
Cut a circular piece of fabric to fit inside the top of baby bottle.
Fill half the bottle with carbonate water.
Take the fabric with a rubber washer (to seal the inside diameter) and screw on the lip.
Shake the bottle and observe. You may get a little leaking around your seal.
Some fabrics will shoot the carbonate water like a stream or will bead the water on top. It’s a simple and easy test.
ROFL! Dude you are not kidding. The smilnylon smoncho is holding up really well I think. I stood in the shower for a few min and stayed relatively dry.
The poncho weighed 6.37 oz before the treatment and 7.41 after. I used a pretty watery mixture. I did not measure any quantities I just eyeballed it. I did the poncho AFTER it was made and that seemed to work alright. I might go back and hit the seams with another light coat.
I am having trouble finding some light weight plastic snaps that I think will stay in and NOT rip the fabric when I try to unsnap things. I dont know if velco will work (I doubt it). I think it will be too weak. I dont know. This is my first poncho...I mean Shmoncho. I will give it some more treatment tmw but now I have to finish that darn zipper mod on the HH!

My experience with velcro tells me when it gets wet... it don't stick for beans. Unless you get the really heavy duty high quality medical appliance application stuff which is kind of hard to find and wicked hard to swallow the price for. But YMMV
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Thanks Rev,
I was going to try it but even dry I was doubting its hold strength. I made some toggles but wow they are all fashioned from some wood dowel and are quite labor intensive. I want to use like 8 total but it would take a while to make them all. Anyone know what kind of snaps i might use? i could try a zipper but that is getting carried away. Plus since i have not really seen it done on a poncho there is probably a good reason.

The lightest thing I have seen that would be DIY compatible in my view would be tie strings. Just put the tie strings where you would put the snap. The keep them tied unless there is a reason to untie them. I don't know anyone who puts a poncho on any way but just over the head. Plastic snaps are available but for any outdoors purpose I would think you would need some kind of fusing machine to put them on. Sew on snaps or the ever popular bra hooks would work too... but for my money I think I'd just tie it shut.

I have toyed with the idea of strings and I might still do it. I just checked out the pics they have over at MLD. That is a pretty sweet poncho and mine looks very similar to it. I like the idea of putting the snap through the grosgrain. I might just ttry one since I already bought some buttons.

Sewing is fun!
Sigh. Dude.... Listen to the wife. I originally suggested ties, then toggles, now he's listening to ya'all with the ties. Men never listen to the women.
Ya'll are cracking me up! Hey how about one of you sending me a picture of that fire hydrant on the corner in front of the townhall? LOLOL
