You may be right... we should see if one of his friends name is Carl and Carl likes them french fried puhtaters *mmm*

My guess is that the friend thing is an attempt by the software makers to add a social media component but it doesn't work as well as... social media that is made for social media

I see the same thing. Folks who may have posted frequently in the past seem to have disappeared.

A couple of thoughts come to mind.

One is that there has been an increase in vendors, some who are creative and innovative and others who are great at their craft and using public domain ideas as the basis of their business. With that many of the threads of "what if we tried this" have vanished and those with ideas are taking the R&D off line for business purposes. (If I were one of them I would likely do the same.)

Some I know were very active years ago on here. They attended group hangs, made friends and are still hiking and camping together but not posting. The virtual social aspect of the forum was replaced with actual social activity.

With others, I suspect alien abduction.

When someone dies, usually nobody informs the forum, so they just remain members forever.

I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.

There is some utility...for those folks with whom I have frequent conversations via pm, it makes it easier. That is quite possibly the worst sentence I've ever written.

    Some are still quietly watching.

I've got a couple of old friends that I met early in my hammocking career here on HF. We stay in contact but they never seem to login. Then one of them will start talking about an active thread, but their account still shows no activity. They just aren't logging in, but are still reading.

I do think that the plethora of vendors keeps some of the really creative and gifted minds among us from posting their ideas. That isn't to say we don't still have some brilliant ideas floated around here, just that they don't come on a weekly basis anymore. I suspect there is still a very healthy amount of PMs between individuals about new ideas and concepts. The innovators have just gone underground...well, the ones that weren't abducted by aliens anyway.

For what ever reason I am reminded of the line from one the songs we sang at summer camp when I was a kid. "Make new friends, but keep thee old. One is silver and the other gold."

I have developed some very good friendships through this forum. Folks I suspect I will at least stay in touch with the rest of my days. If they want to still tolerate me.

I know I was watching some juggling and boomeranging that was cool. I have to get one of those boomerangs. What else do you get into, Because you may be a hammockers best friend and teacher and as such you also bolster the economy. I got a hammock and UQ, TQ and tried a unicycle (**** near killed myself) any got my wife to ask, what the hell am I going to do with a boomerang. I told her I was going to hunt bears with it (got weird look). Shug buddy, your costing/cost me a tidy sum in a short time and I like it.
Whether trail or paddle don't you know
My hammock is the way to go
There peace and solitude I find
To ease all troubles from my mind
Both body and soul revel in delight
