Knots-Whats your favorite

The Bowline and the Sheetbend are not the same knot. I have a training video somewhere illustrating this, I will find it and post it to YouTube for us to discuss. They look the same, but they are not the same, if you tie a Sheetbend and use it as you would a Bowline it will fail!

I accept that if you use a Sheetbend as a Bowline the pull is through different parts of the knot so it may not be as strong. I would be interested if the video shows a comparison of both knots on the same rated rope/cord and pull.

Marlin spike hitch, slippery half, and prussic (prussic being my fave). If for some reason I need others, I just kind of wing it and hope for the best.

Correct, Typically a Bowline is used for an open loop that does not slip and a sheet bend is used to join to ropes or to connect to a grommet on a tarp. I usually slip a bight through to make a quick release.

On average I use the following knots with the frequency listed. These %s are rough guesses but represent real experience recently. When I used to camp with a heavy pack, I used these same knots at different rates.

I use a figure 8 knot only to secure the ends. Most of my other knows are a bowline at the end of all tie outs so I only have to slip the stakes in. I also use a voladian tresse knot for adjusting my tie outs. I find this knot works better than prussics, swaibish or kliemish knots. I am sure most of those were spelt wrong. Lol. Other than that whatever knot I feel I need at the time. Have I mentioned I am an arborist and a scout leader. I like my knots. Others are blunt hitch, two half hitches, clove hitch and butterfly are others.

Bow line, figure 8, and clove hitch are probably my three most used. I like double fisherman for making loops too.

It's been called a "Jesus Knot" because that's what you say trying to unravel the thing. Maybe should invest in one of those knot books, but its just one more thing to leave at home.

In my hammock setup, I have Bowlines (don't have to tie them regularly, though), Tautline Hitch, and Two Half-Hitches. I use the 2HH and TLH in rigging my tarp right now. My tarp rig is shockingly Dutchware-free at the moment (though my son's rig is pretty Dutchware blingy).

I'm about to spend a weekend campout teaching Webelos Scouts some outdoor skills, and we're going to do a section on knots. I'll be teaching them the three above plus the Square Knot, of course. If they grok those pretty quickly, I think I'll add a Sheet Bend and maybe a Clove Hitch.
