    The only knot I use frequently in the woods is the Marlin Spike hitch. Most everything else is already tied or spliced. In preparing ropes or cords, I most often use Lark's Heads, Alpine Butterflies, Prusiks, and Double Overhands.

    I've got Knot Guide for iOS. I've found it to be a really handy tool for learning knew knots and for helping out when I'm trying to remember a knot that I don't use very often.

    My most used knots when hammocking;

    Prussic knot for tensioning the tarp

    Siberian or Evenk hitch. ( Its actually a slipped figure 8) When its cold enough to need to wear mitts, this hitch becomes a lifesaver.

    Slipped guyline knot- for attaching guys to tree roots/stumps/deadmen.

    Hank knot

    Larks head

    Timber hitch

    Aside from these regularly used hitches and knots, these I find all have their place;

    Sledge knot ( also called a ratchet knot)
    Tautline hitch
    Perfection loop
    Fig 8's
    Fig 9's
    Fig 10 jams (like a figure 9 but with more twists)
    Snell
    Klemheist
    Diamond/Lanyard knot
    4 Turn water knot
    Double overhand stopper knot
    Triple fishermans

    I'm still figuring out all my new knots - mastered the Prussik

    What do y'all use for tying a permanent knot in shockcord? I need to tie the shockcord off to loops on the doors of my tarp.

    I've spent hours and hours sitting here with animated knots and string but everything I've played with won't work under repeated load on shockcord!!

    Truckers hitch is the way to go for a lot of my needs, I also use prussic knots a lot, slippery half hitches, and square knots. A good knowledge of knots can save you a lot of weight in hardware.

    I use a water knot for making shockcord loops through the guyline attachments on a tarp. Yup, water knot is for webbing - but they hold just fine in my tarp loops. Once the water knot is tied, dressed, and tightened - pull again to tighten as much as possible without breaking the cord.

    One-Handed Bowline, Siberian Hitch, Taut-Line Hitch, Prussik Knot, Alpine Butterfly Loop, Truckers Hitch. The one-handed bowline is a must-know knot (IMO) for anyone who hikes, climbs, kayaks, canoes etc.
