    New UL tarp material.. Polycro

Just read a short blurb on an UL tarp made by David Garnder and held together with racing yacht sail repair tape.. at ~ 5 oz and $70-110 for the tarp, it sounds interesting. I think I did read a thread once about someone else doing something like this but thought I would throw this out there..

I might be concerned in a good blow..

I'm not sure how I feel about the transparency. I'm sure it's plenty strong, but it looks like cheap plastic by appearances alone.

I believe Stick does a short review of the tarp on his blog.

There have been a couple of attempts at this over the last year or two. The general verdict has been that the material is just too fragile to make a good tarp material.

Maybe the sailmaker's tape addresses the problem, maybe not. Dunno. But it seems that tie-out points and seams are the usual failure points. If you wind up getting that tarp, make sure you check those points each time you go out.

Stick did a write up on his blog about one of Davids tarp creations, he also took it onto the trail.

See links below for more info and to see the videos he made(there is more there too):

Might make a good poncho or a pack cover. Lightweight dodgers (doors) for your regular tarp.

I always carried a piece of visqeen to cover firewood. Why let it get wet after going to the trouble of dragging it to camp? Polycro would work well for that, eh?

It would work well as an emergency solar water still.

62" is wide enough for a single person as an emergency shelter.

Talked myself into getting some! LOL

Thanks Cranky! It was an interesting review. Yea I would not risk a potential tarp failure for the benefits of a few oz over cuben and visibility (although not sure I would fully appreciate this trying to nap during the day).
