I like mine to be comfortable when I sit in it. Shouldn't be so high or low that it is difficult to get in and out.

Between that and comfortable sitting position... When I am testing something its about 4", once its a setup a trust I will hang it about sitting level...

+1 on sitting level. With my bad knees I find if I set it too low I have a very hard time standing up out of the hammock.

Most of us do change out stock for amsteel and tree slaps. If you add a ridgeline at 83% your hammock length, your sag will stay pretty consistent....that is if you are using suspension that doesn't stretch much. I hang high enough that my UQ doesn't drag, yet I can sit on the side of it comfortably.

    Optimal height

As long as the gear covering my posterior, UQ, bug net etc., is not on the ground.

Maybe is the best answer I can give you... I know ny 11 foot hammock with the 83% ridgeline means the body of the hammock is like 35" away from ridgeline... But that's going to be cutting it real close... That gives you 7" for suspension... Possible, but perfect set up it going to be required if your straps have to be under 42"...
