VIDEO: Sierra Snow Check and the Lake Spaulding Trail

We've had a really low snow year this winter. New Hammock Forum member Kodepop mentioned that he went backpacking up in the same area I go to last month. But usually that road is completely snowed in. Yesterday, I decided to go check out the snow levels and then pick a hike to go on depending on the snow levels.

I ended up going on the Lake Spaulding trail and I had a couple little adventures. But it was an awesome day.

    Hi there GregB,

It’s good to see you out on the trail, curing yourself of that ever so nasty Cabin Fever! That was a **** fine, fast flowing waterfall, it looked great! You were having a great time, trying to cross the creek - good fun! Getting lost is on my, top five favorite things I like about hiking, list - more good fun! I’m not sure that shear good looks will help with getting un lost! lol One hell of a good day! Thanks for the video, GregB, really good fun!

Since you are in the area

What are the odds of crossing the sierras via sonora pass May 2 ?

Sonora pass is at 9,624 ft. which should still have a ton of snow. My guess is that highway 108 may not be open by May 2 but you could probably hike/showshoe in by that date.

[edit] I just found this site which shows the dates of the mountain road closures for the past several years. Sonora pass was open in early May last year and this is a much lighter snow year that last year (which was also an incredibly dry year). So Highway 108 open by May 2nd may be a real possibility this year.

    GregB, awesome

thanks for the insight and the link. So it just might be possible! Would save many hours driving around plus get to see the sites along the way which must be worth seeing.

Glad to see you out for a hike Greg. Looks like severe drought coming your way. Hope things work out.

Great video Greg, thanks for sharing.
Just goes to prove that every day in the outdoors is an adventure. Even if it's "just" a dayhike.
