    Wait just a minute!

Lots of good advice here (and thanks everyone!) I'll be experimenting and reading reviews, but something just caught my eye. Mr. "Slo" lists in his equipment list the Downmat 7 UL, which is something I own and currently use in my standard backpacking setup. Are you telling me that you use this for hammock camping? I was already ruling this out. Tell me more!

    Downmat 7

    Two things I have noticed.

One is that there is a whole forum devoted to bottom insulation, which is where I need to go do some reading and maybe where this discussion ultimately belongs.

Two is that what I own is a downmat 7 (not the UL version). It weighs 31 ounces. It has been my "luxury item" in my ultralight setup -- I allow myself the luxury because my old beat up bones like sleeping on the ground less and less as the years go by. Now that I find myself considering it for hammock use, several thoughts strike me:

    1) I already own it, no need to spend more money.
    2) If forced to the ground, it will serve me well.
    3) I was hoping the comfort of a hammock would allow me to not carry it and save weight.
    4) It is a tad skinny.

Still curious to hear what Slo's present thinking is.
