I'm glad to see this post pop-up again - it is good reference.
I also use these simple lashings/jam knots; they are easily untied - 'not knots'.

    Yosemite bowline!

I love the bowline (step 1, 2 in image below) to make a quick loop at the end of a line, but with slippery zing-it it need more security.
That is where the Yosemite finish (step 3, 4) comes in.
Excellent! I'll have to remember that for slippery line.

Thanks for this thread. It's been years since I consistently used knots so I'll admit I've neglected practice but this pumped me up to start practicing.

Seriously, what a ton of work to compile.Thank you so much. Knots are obviously unendingly useful, and perfect for shaving weight off your pack. I love substituting hardware with knots! The more you know the less you carry. Thank you for the useful post.

What a great thread! I was disappointed to find many of these knots missing from the Animated Knots by Grog app (for which I spent $5), but a YouTube Playlist gives me a quick review of all my favorites. I love knots! Just a "handful" lets you do so much in the woods, on a boat or anywhere at all. Thanks again for the great thread--subscribed!

    +1 on watching youtube .

I bought a set of knot cards from proknot.com, and they go everywhere with me. There are two sets, best rope knots, and fishing knots. This way, if I forget, I just look up the knot in question. There are 20 knots included in the best rope knot set, but I find myself only using 4 of them, the bowline, the prussic, the taught line hitch, and the sheetbend. These cards have been a nice addition to my edc.

Good job on this thread, and keep on practicing your knots.

So a piece of rope, we'll call him Hank, is thirsty and needs a beer.
The first bar he comes to has a sign which reads "No Ropes Allowed". Now our Hank is a bit brash, so saunters in, hops up on a stool, and demands a beer.
"Are you a piece of rope?" asks the Barkeep.
"Of course I am", Hank proudly replies.
The barkeep points at the sign and then the door, and states "No beer for you!"
At the next bar, Hank again sees the No Rope sign, but figures he'll have success if he tries being nicer.
From his stool, Hank inquires "Excuse me, good sir, may I trouble you for a pint of your finest?"
"Wait a minute, are you a piece of rope?" asks the bartender. Hank nods, and is quickly tossed out.
At the third bar, the same "No Ropes Allowed" sign. But Hank has an idea.
He ties himself into a bowline, and tears apart a few strands at one end.
Confident, he enters and takes his place at the bar.
"Yo, barkeep, cold brew over here!"
The bartender looks him over suspiciously, but reaches toward the cooler anyway. Suddenly he stops and asks Hank,
"Are you a piece of rope?"
    "No, I'm afraid not."

Oh yeah, great thread, thanks for the links.
