Question Heat, Mosquitoes & Tarp Color

I did a search for this topic, but only found an old archived thread that mainly dealt with stealth vs being found in an emergency. If this is a redundant thread, I apologize!

Since my tarps will spend more time being used in the summer I was worried that a dark color tarp will heat up the air, and me, below. Have any of you black tarp users found this to be the case?

When looking around at ripstop it seems black tends to be the cheapest color and while I'm all for saving a buck or two, I don't want to put the money out only to sew myself a portable oven.

I also read that blue tends to attract mosquitoes. Anyone know if this is true or not? If this is true I may have to replace my blue Wally World tarps quicker than I had originally planned.

Re: Heat, Mosquitoes & Tarp Color

On the mosquito thing... Mosquitoes are attracted to heat and dark colors... I have read that on more than one out door website and a few scientific websites... So it must be true if I saw it on the internet

I thought the same thing, but I found that the dark sil nylon keeps the sun light out better and not as hot for me...

Well duh! They can't put anything on the internet that isn't true. I wish I could remember where in the internet I read that...

How high above your hammock do you hang your tarp?

I have no problems with the black.. I am usually up and out before the heat of the day anyway.. Love the stealth.. Height of tarp really depends on weather conditions..
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..

Doubt the color of the tarp will make that much difference as the air can circulate and is not trapped like it would be in a tent.

99% of the time your going to be hanging in the shade to begin with under the tree canopy. Color never made much of a diff. to me or the bug world. Once you are around skeeters, your around them no matter what.

Darker colors obviously absorb more heat. However, my HG CF tarp is whitish and it can generate some heat under direct sunlight 'cause it's not very breathable.

As for mosquitoes and colors, I don't find much compelling scientific evidence, mostly anecdotal. I feel kind of stupid trying to outwit mosquitoes.

I do know (from my own anecdotal evidence) that eating a boatload of garlic will scare off skeeters (and just about everything else).

I had a bright blue stuff sack that the mosquitoes loved. It could be next to other gear and they would flock to the blue. Something about uv rays?
