Ditto. This is great work! I went to a small campgrounds in CT on the Housatonic River and hammocks were not allowed. At the time, I was still using tents and just thinking about hammocks. Interestingly, my next door neighbor was a hammocker (but in a UL tent at the time due to the rules). He had all his gear with him, showing me his quilts and CF tarps.. We had a great time talking about it - small world really but i digress from the point. My feeling is that it could be that with knowledge and increased awareness, these rules could be changed from No hammocks in the park to Only hammocks with webbings or some other non-damaging methods.

I know that is not the intent of this thread but it could be the outcome, at least in some parks and that would be a positive thing.

Your question below was referred to me for response, I apologize for the delay in getting back to you, but I have been at Big Bend Ranch State Park, which has very limited email access.

Texas State Parks do not specifically prohibit hammock camping in our sites and we have campers using hammocks currently. With that said, please note the following clause in our Rules of Conduct (Texas Administrative Code, Title 31, Chapter 59, RULE §59.134):

“It is an offense for any person to willfully mutilate, injure, destroy, pick, cut, remove, or introduce any plant life except by permit issued by the director.”

As you noted, modern hammocks are available that can be used with little or no impact to trees. However, improper installation of a camping hammock or attaching a hammock to tree of insufficient size or strength could damage or otherwise endanger the tree. While the park system strives to be consistent in our operating procedures, assessment of these impacts is left to the discretion and judgment of individual park management. These staff members will base their decisions on specific local conditions including the size and species of tree, as well as stress factors such as drought or other conditions.

I encourage you to visit with park staff prior to installing a hammock if you have not previously hammock camped at that site to avoid any complications.

Thank you for your interest in Texas State Parks!

That's probably the most thought out, intelligent response from any of the park representatives.

This is awesome, REV! Thanks for all the information.

Have you heard any follow up on the Virginia 1.5" strap policy? I am thinking of emailing them myself with a request for 1" as the minimum.

i havent as of yet, but let them get their thoughts in order. being inundated with requests would probably only delay the process at this time. i feel that i provided enough info and references to the 1" straps being the minimum that, with luck, theyll have enough evidence to go with that as the rule.
