Does anyone know if there is any easy way to tell nylon vs polypro vs polyester webbing my looking at it? I snagged one of the free (+shipping) 5lb bags of webbing from Strapworks but I don't really know what on earth I have.

I've heard of a method called a burn test and its exactly like it sounds mouse. A little google foo should tell you enough on how to do it. Other than that; I dunno...

I remember reading somewhere that polypro smells like heated wax when burned.

I've heard of the burn testing before. I had a bad experience with nylon before. The friction of the stretching actually caused the loop to melt to the webbing going though it causing me to have to cut it off the tree. I would prefer to avoid that situation again. I guess since I'll just be using this stuff to hang extra hammocks in the yard it probably doesn't matter what the 1.5 in stuff is made out of.

How do you go about scoring a free 5 pound bag of webbing?

Here's the link. You can get 1 or 5 lb bags by just paying shipping. It's a bunch of misc stuff that they have sitting around that's probably too short so sell, some of it is probably 10+ft though.
