DIY Tarp Extension Idea

So what I am thinking about doing is adding extra fabric to the bottom of my tarp. This would give me better coverage from the constant winds here in west Texas and at the same time allow me to stand up under my tarp.

The way that I am thinking about doing this is by adding velcro to the bottom of the tarp, so that I could easily take it off when it is not needed.

Has anyone done anything like this before? Any thoughts/ideas on this?

I have thought about that from time to time. Velcro is fine, but would be an awful lot of velcro and could pickup a lot of crud. You could also consider overlapping the top part over the bottom part and using mitten hooks or some type of fastener spaced across the fabric.

I have thought about that but didn't want it to maybe flap around in the wind. My thought on the velcro is that maybe I could also make some bugnet extenders for the summer days to have some air circulation and still have a bug proof area.

You could also roll a hem on both pieces that had a thin long piece of plastic in it. I suspect you would need to divide the hem into sewed sections. But you could then match up the ends and let the hems catch on each other...tension would keep them together.

I tried this on several of my DIY tarps and it works well. I used the Micro Grip Clips from Shelter Systems:

hi, would a zipper,along the hem, work?

That was my first thought as well, but the problem is that I would need a seperating zipper and they do not make them long enough. My superly is 132" and my oldman winter is 144" ridge lines and the longest seperating zipper that I was able to find is 110" and costs between $10-15.

Incase anyone was wondering, you can not take a continuous zipper and make it into a seperating zipper without the proper precise equipment. So zippers are out of the picture for this project

Here is a pic of the camo Velcro on my oldman winter tarp. The Velcro is on the inside of the tarp.
